Do you ever wonder where God is? Some perceive God to be off up in the sky somewhere out of reach. Others perceive God to be inside of them while there are some who look for Him in a church building. The truth is that God can be found in all those places. To know where God is we need an open heart and an open mind because God can be found in some unlikely places.
The perception that God exists somewhere in the sky, or the sweet by and by, is a true perception. In John chapter 14, just before He ascended into the heavens, Jesus did tell us that in His Father’s house are many mansions and that He was going there to prepare a place for us. So, God does exist in the sky, or Heaven. As believers in Christ, we see Heaven as a place that we will go to someday and live with God. But, do I really have to wait until I die and go to Heaven to find God?
Colossians 1:27 “……Christ in you the hope of glory,” tells us that God, through Christ, dwells within those who believe in Him. Sometimes this word glory is mistaken for Heaven and many believe that Christ being in us, is our access into heaven. True, Christ is the only way into eternal life in Heaven but this word is not about a place. The greek word for glory, doxa, means honor or a divine quality. Paul, the author, will go on in vs. 28 and tell us, “We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.” So, our only hope of truly becoming a complete person of honor and possessing any divine qualities is to have Christ in us. Although all believers will someday be in the presence of God in Heaven we now have His presence within us through His Holy Spirit. So, God does dwell within us.
Having served much of my ministry in church leadership, I have met many individuals that come to church to find God. I know that God can be found in church but I also know that God does not dwell in church buildings. God does dwell in His Church and His Church is not a building. Ministry buildings merely serve as tools to facilitate the activities of different facets of His Church. I have however, had special encounters with God inside a building during a time of worship. Many others having had the same type of experiences have attributed a building to the place where God is. Jacob made this same mistake when he fell asleep and had a vision of a ladder that reached from earth to heaven. In Genesis 28:16-17 says, “Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” God had just told him in the vision vs. 15, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” We must realize that God doesn’t live in any one geographical location or any building, but to the believer He is where ever we are.
I feel at times that I can’t locate God in my life and then I suddenly become aware of Him in some of the most unlikely places. As a kid I have a memory of my parents having a financial need and God sending an unbeliever to the door to meet that very need. I received a phone call the other day from the owner of a bar who wanted to donate some things to our homeless ministry that we needed. God once spoke to me through a man who was very intoxicated about a spiritual struggle I was having at the time. Jesus Himself was accused of being a glutton and a drunk because He would take time to have a meal with some unscrupulous characters of His day. Romans 1:20 tells us, ” For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Truth is God is everywhere and can be seen in all of His creation. David tells us this in Psalms 139:7-13, ” Where could I go to escape from you? Where could I get away from your presence? If I went up to heaven, you would be there; if I lay down in the world of the dead, you would be there. If I flew away beyond the east or lived in the farthest place in the west, you would be there to lead me, you would be there to help me. I could ask the darkness to hide me or the light around me to turn into night, but even darkness is not dark for you, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are the same to you. You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb.”
When you are feeling down or alone and you are not sure where God is, just open your heart and your mind, wherever you are, and you will find Him.
